Matakana Pony Club Secures Future at Jubilee Park with New Licence Agreement
The Matakana Branch Pony Club is proud to announce that it has been granted a new non-exclusive licence to occupy Jubilee Park securing the club’s access to the grounds they originally cleared and maintained for nearly 50 years. The five-year licence includes rights of renewal for an additional five years as well as a 10 year lease on the existing club house, ensuring the club’s future in the heart of Matakana’s green space.
This significant milestone was made possible thanks to the support of the Rodney Local Board (RLB) and the invaluable contributions from the Mahurangi Equestrian Advocacy Group (MEAG). MEAG, representing the northern region within the National Equestrian Advocacy Group, provided key professional data that helped present a compelling case for continued support of equestrian sport in the region.
“On behalf of the entire club, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the RLB and MEAG for recognising the importance of preserving safe, educational and inclusive spaces for youth equestrian development,” said a spokesperson for Matakana Pony Club.
Established in 1977, Matakana Branch Pony Club (MBPC) is part of the Waitemata Rodney Area Pony Club and the national body, New Zealand Pony Club Association (NZPCA)—a non-profit organisation focused on teaching horsemanship, leadership, and life skills to young people of all abilities through structured programs and qualified coaching.
What often goes unseen is the depth of connection, mentorship, and community spirit that the club fosters. “Beyond the saddle, we’re building resilience, accountability, responsibility, and respect. Our volunteers, parents, and riders care deeply about ensuring the pony clubs program and curriculum remains accessible for future generations,” the spokesperson added.
Pony Club plays a crucial role in shaping strong, confident young people, and its impact stretches far beyond riding. As the world’s largest equestrian youth volunteer organisation, Pony Club boasts alumni that include Olympians and world champions—all of whom began their journeys at grassroots clubs like Matakana.
Navigating Change and Embracing Community Use
The new licence arrives at a time of change, as community feedback has called for better shared use of the Diamond Jubilee Park. While the park has always been a shared public space, perceptions of exclusivity and the presence of fixed jump structures raised concerns within the Matakana Community Group.
In response, Matakana Pony Club has committed to removing all fixed cross-country jumps and agreed to pack down temporary structures when not in use and as is reasonably feasible. This decision, supported by the RLB, reflects the club’s desire to collaborate and create a welcoming space for all recreational users. For the application to use the grounds, click here.
The club also supports plans for the upcoming pump track construction, set to begin in October 2025, and will work closely with the Matakana Community Group to ensure a safe, shared environment throughout the development phase.
